Odor control at biodiesel plant

Customized ozone solution from Primozone proves to be the key to removing odor created by biodiesel plant in Lithuania.

Mestilla is an environmentally friendly producer of biodiesel. The biodiesel is produced from vegetable (canola) oil and during the process of pressing the oil a distinctive smell of hydrogen sulfide is formed. This distinctive smell is a nuisance to the neighborhood as the plant is situated in a densely populated area in the port of Klaipeda, Lithuania.

Removal of H2S

At the Mestilla plant they had problems with the odor from hydrogen sulfide and made a thorough investigation into how to solve the problem. The result showed that ozone provided the most efficient solution.

Other methods like scrubbers and bio-filters were also evaluated. The scrubbers proved not to solve the problem while the bio-filters were both less efficient and more expensive than ozone.

The Primozone ozone solution

Primozone created, together with Mestilla, a compact ozone solution that could be fitted into the existing premises. A minimum amount of ozone is blended into the plant’s exhaust. The exhaust is then diverted into a reaction chamber where the odor particles are degraded.

The ozone generator has spare upgrade capacity if Mestilla would want to increase plant production in the future without replacing their odor control system.
