Odor Control at a Biodiesel Plant

Customized ozone solution from Primozone proves to be the key to removing odor created by biodiesel plant in Lithuania.
Mestilla is an environmentally friendly producer of biodiesel made from vegetable (canola) oil. During the pressing process, a distinctive smell of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is formed. This odor is a nuisance to the surrounding neighborhood as the plant is located in the densely populated port area of Klaipeda, Lithuania. Addressing this issue was critical not only for regulatory compliance but also for maintaining good relations with the local community.
Removal of H2S with Ozone
At the Mestilla plant, odor problems from hydrogen sulfide prompted a thorough investigation into possible solutions. The study revealed that ozone provided the most efficient and reliable solution. The adoption of ozone has significantly improved air quality and minimized complaints from nearby residents.
Alternative methods, including scrubbers and bio-filters, were also evaluated. Scrubbers failed to resolve the odor issue, while bio-filters were less efficient and more costly compared to ozone.
Objective
Reduce micropollutants in wastewater through ozonation and contribute to a safe and healthy environment for operators working on site.

Mestilla UAB
Mestilla UAB is a state-of-the-art biodiesel producer in the Baltic States, with Linas Agro Group AB as the majority shareholder and Statoil owning 49% of the company.
The Primozone Ozone Solution
Primozone collaborated with Mestilla to design a compact ozone system that fits seamlessly into the existing plant. A minimal amount of ozone is blended into the exhaust, which is then directed into a reaction chamber where odor particles are broken down and eliminated.
The ozone generator is equipped with spare capacity, allowing Mestilla to increase plant production in the future without the need to replace the odor control system.
